RPL can assist Student Veterans in commencing their studies in higher education with the advantage of shorter study times, cost savings, and/or the ability to study part-time.
HE institutions should create pre-approved packages of RPL by conducting an assessment of Initial Employment Training (IET) courses and promotion courses delivered by the ADF. The amount of credit available would be dependent on the duration of service and the rank achieved. The relevant course rules and RPL rules must be applied and will influence how much RPL the Student Veteran may be eligible for.

The RPL process is triggered by the Student Veteran once they have enrolled in study units.
Credit will usually only be granted for prior learning completed within the last 10 years. Executive Deans may be able to approve waivers of this rule in certain circumstances.
The amount of credit available is dependent on the duration of service and the rank they achieved.
As a general rule, the maximum amount of credit granted is usually two-thirds of a 3-year bachelor’s degree, three quarters of a 4-year bachelor’s degree, or one-half of a postgraduate course.
The ADF Service Record provides useful details such as date and type of enlistment, duty stations and assignments and training modules or promotion courses completed.
The Credit Assessment team review the credit application, applying the key considerations in the graphic below.
If eligible, RPL will appear on their student transcript, and Student Veterans can adjust their enrolment accordingly.
